Chrissie Hynde
Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders has been up to some new music:
Hi people – my people!
Seems I’ve been traveling a lot lately.
Went to New Orleans and played a few tunes at a little show – a birthday party for Paul Allen who wrote that song I was telling you about – First Rodeo.
The other ‘talent’ who took to the stage were Joe Walsh – Dr. John, and Greg Allman. (Yeah – I know what you’re thinking – sounds like a scene out of The Night of the Living Dead.)
Actually – everybody looked surprisingly well. And they all played as good as ever and sang remarkably well. Better than ever I thought.
Funny, isn’t it, how athletes, who look after themselves so diligently, are more or less on the way out after 30. But us ‘musicians’ (the quotation marks denote me in this case as I am not nearly the musician that Joe, Greg or Mac are) live a shambolic drug fuelled alcoholic existence, hell bent on destruction, and we get away with thriving long into old age. (the ones of us that are left that is). Doesn’t seem fair does it?
That’s why I’m asking Johnny Mac (MacEnroe to you) to play on the record I’m making in Sweden. He wanted to be a guitar player anyway but got waylaid by sports. (Just shows ya John – ya can’t win em all!)
Anyway – the highlight of the Paul Allen show for me was singing ‘First Rodeo’ on stage for the first time. I donned a cowboy hat for that baby – and you know what – it really does help when you’re singing a country song. Don’t ask me why, but now I understand why all those country singers wear them. If you don’t believe me – try it next time you go to a karaoke bar. You’ll see the difference in your performance, I promise.
Oh yeah, and Gina Gershon was in the audience so I played an especially inspired harmonica solo – inspired by her delightful performance in Killer Joe – (the KFC scene.) Dan Mathews, PETA vice president (president of both vice and PETA if you must know) introduced me to her after the show and I was ‘chuffed ‘ (that’s English for ‘ very f*****g pleased).
Then I flew to LA on Sea. Saw James Hood of Moodswings fame. He’s got another humdinger ready to be released in what should prove to be a rather spectacular and unprecedented —— well, I can’t tell you anymore cause blabbermouth here will spoil the surprise. I CAN tell you that blabbermouth here is singing on the album.
Oh yeah, and I got taken over to David Lynch’s house where he has a studio and makes records. That guy rocks along with being generally awesome. Now I’m listening to his album ‘Crazy Clown Time’. (and what else could David Lynch possibly call his album?)
Then back to London and just got back from a night in Paris to have dinner with Marie France of Marie France fame. Did you hear the song I sang with her on the latest Phantom album? ‘Un Garcon qui Pleure’. Yes, sorry to say I duet with her in French. She sings beautifully and I just about pull it off. Anyway – a great album featuring Marie with the tremendous Belgian band Phantom, worth getting and listening to many times. I never told you about it before as I was not doing these ‘blogs’ yet. Oh – and Marie singing Brigitte Bardot – that’s another one you gotta hear. Never off MY turntable.
Well, that’s all my news. I’m off to Stockholm now to do make some more studio magic with Joakim Ålhund (Teddybears).
My life is just soooooo boring!!
