Should Coastal Communities Be Rebuilt

“The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative, a bipartisan 16-member council representing diverse ocean interests, released a new report, “Charting the Course: Securing the Future of America’s Oceans.” The report outlines important ocean reform and coastal restoration recommendations for Congress and the Obama Administration.”

However, some scientists and economists suggest we spend no money restoring coastal communities. As the sea level rises due to global warming, there will be no practical way to keep the population above water. Since flood insurance is a government program, advocates suggest FEMA not offer insurance to coastal communities.
