2 Tone Ska

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

2 Tone (Two Tone) Ska is a music genre created in the United Kingdom in the late 1970’s. The music is a combination of ska, punk rock, rocksteady, reggae, and new wave. The name comes from the 2 Tone Records label to which the band’s were signed. Other labels associated with the 2 Tone sound were Stiff Records and Go Feet Records. Within the history of ska, 2 Tone is classified as its second wave, the product of an early 1980s nostalgia for vintage music.

The 2 Tone sound was developed by young musicians (mostly in Coventry, West Midlands, England) who grew up hearing 1960s Clement Dodd Jamaican music. They combined 1960s ska with contemporary punk and pop music. Bands considered part of the genre include: The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, Bad Manners, and The Bodysnatchers.

The term was coined by The Specials’ keyboardist Jerry Dammers, who, with the assistance of Horace Panter, also created the fictional Walt Jabsco logo to represent the 2 Tone movement. It was based on an early album cover photo of Peter Tosh, and included an added black-and-white check pattern.

Linda told me Janis drove the stone across the USA by herself in that painted porche…
Linda and Janis had planned to do it together…
they both studied the blues (self taught)… Ma Rainy, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday
and lots of others less known… it’s in the books now, easy to find…
Linda and i went to the grave two or three times…
Janis had made a promise to put a stone on her grave… Bessie “died on the steps of a philadelphia hospital, Janis Joplin put a tombstone on the grave… and the smooth… tell me what happened to the smooth… ” from a Linda Waldron song… somewhere i have a copy…

Janis used to pick Linda up at the sanfrancisco airport in this porche, too…
she’d throw a fur coat over her just from honolulu and they’d party…
